The Turkey Whisperer
So a week or two ago we were up near Pacific Palisades doing a photoshoot. It was unusual for a few reasons:
1. We don’t usually do photoshoots
2. It was raining
3. There was a pet turkey
Wait, what? A pet turkey? That’s right. In someone’s yard right by this amazing oceanic overlook (where we were trying to take pictures) was a gigantic turkey. I assume it was someones pet because it had a turkey-house (similar to a dog house, but built for a turkey).
I hadn’t seen one up close in years so I decided right away to go up and try to communicate with it. Luckily Evan had a video camera handy, and documented this phenomenal encounter between man and beast. Well, enough building up, here’s the damn video already:
Certainly an oscar-worthy short film.
PS: The film that won best short animated feature is called Logorama and it’s freaking amazing. I highly recommend checking it out.

If it makes you feel better, my neighborhood has a roving group of wild turkeys, and they are no friendlier than this one.

Next time you have an amazing encounter such as this, may I also recommend a series of short, high-pitched clucks and chirps. This imitates the ladies, and will definitely get that Tom runnin’. Check out youtube for more details

Due to an unfortunate event involving sparring male peacocks as a small child, I have a completely justified fear of large birds. (Particularly geese.)In a twist of fate, I had to recently face said fear head on. I am currently wrapping up my undergrad thesis on the sociology of pet ownership. At one interview, I had to maintain my poise while being circled by a large pet rooster. (It was hard, but I made it out alive, even after a fight erupted between the pet rooster and a Jack Russell terrier.) The most interesting thing about this pet rooster, however, is that it has been known to wear a rooster-sized tophat when it attends weddings hosted at its home.
