Lyrics

from The Sad Thing Is, We Like It Here

Interview

In our lives, how do we perceive?
Do we know whats right or do we just believe?
We can name when it's black or white.
It won't look the same when it's shades of light.

I woke up this morning to the
interview on the radio.
It was this bitter old lady preaching 'bout
how much she hated the world.

And it hit me like whiplash, oh but I
couldn't get up to turn it off. It was
Like watching a car crash.
Your mouth is open but you can't find a word.

Attacking the people
With the book she molested in the palm of her hand.
How can you take what is based on love
To hate those you don't understand?

And it hit me like whiplash, oh but I
couldn't get up to turn it off. It was
Like watching a car crash.
Your mouth is open but you can't find a word.

Turn the Other Way

Runnin off caffeine, In front of a screen,
These were my waking hours.
Wasn't really alive, just waiting till 5,
as all the suits devour.
Standing over my shoulder as we're all getting older...
Have I done what I hate to do
Good enough for you?

At least I know this ain't for me.
I got no place in a 3 by 3.
And every day they take away
A little bit more of my dignity.

We do what we're told as we're all getting older...
Am I done now shining your shoes?
Is there anything you want me to do?

Cuz I get by
wasting my time with my head up in space
Baby I turn the other way
But I don't mind
that i'm turned and now I'm so far out of that place,
Baby I turn the other, turn the other way

Funds hold me back to let them know
I hate their game so I'm gonna fold.
And every time I look out side
My body says - fuck it, just let it go.

We do what we're told as we're all getting older...
Am I done now shining your shoes?
Good enough for you?

All The Good Ways

It's just one of those days.
I couldn't keep you off my mind.
I couldn't see straight cuz I was
Somewhere else. Just gotta be there sometimes.

You had brought me to this place
That let me pull my body out
Of a rut I used to run.
was gonna bury my head in the ground

But it was different from the start
and we really are, today, like we were.

Cuz we loved in all the good ways
and we fought through all the bad days
yeah we changed in all the good ways
and it's a good day

Crazy looking back now
How we have shaped ourselves to be.
Funny you and I had
always thought we knew what we'd need.

We were born from different worlds
And it almost fell away
Until we stripped our dispositions.
They were baggage anyway.

Come on. You know it's been a while.
It's been enough, and now is when I need you.
I'm standing here to let you know,
You've brought me back to who I really am.

Cuz we loved in all the good ways
and we fought through all the bad days
yeah we changed in all the good ways
We loved, we loved, we loved, we loved, we loved

And it's a good day

Tie You Down

The feeling's very tough, can't shake it off
And the struggle keeps it on.
Here abandonment is billowing
Under the cover of being strong.

"What exactly am I doing here?"
These words have led our logic on to decay.
Our steps have climbed the way but lost their spring.
And rebirth has been forgotten.

You just want to get to the place where you can coast a while,
where things won't tie you down.
But the cold and bloodless grip of the strings you pull will
sooner tie you down.
And to fight your way on through, you need the tools,
and they will always tie you down.

ooooo
You know you have to stand in line.
ooooo
The paint you watch will never dry.

I'd think of everything I could have done,
and burn it out a thousand times,
Obsessing brainlessly what might be gone,
While the good things pass me by.

You just want to get to the place where you can coast a while,
where things won't tie you down.
But the cold and bloodless grip of the strings you pull will
sooner tie you down.
And to fight your way on through, you need the tools,
and they will always tie you down.

You just want to get to the place where you can rest a while,
where things won't tie you down.
But the simple story ends, oh with all the things that used to
tie you down.
You will fight your way on through to burn the rules,
cuz they will always tie you down.

Heads Or Tails

I found you on in the mud,
face down in the street
1973.
could have seen almost anything.

In the palm of a thief,
you fell when he ran
to the getaway van.
Witness to everything.

And you've so much to say, but you're just a grain within the gray.
Never in one place, cuz you know you'll never stay.
Is it heads or is it tails?
Leave your past behind, and your path leave up to faith.

In the middle of a war,
shot down overseas.
Landed somewhere in the trees.
See how far you've flown.

And there you lay,
til somebody saw you,
picked you up and adored you,
so far away from home.

You moved everywhere and back again,
And all you've given is your weary face.
You've seen it all, and all you've been is quiet all these years.
What would you say?

Time has passed,
and he has left you
for some other refuge.
Oh how things have changed.

And people walk by.
All look like they're hooked in,
like no one would listen,
even if you had a way.

Don't Want The Story

They tell me that we need to share the same beliefs,
To be strong, never wrong, that we're always meant to be.

Can we be good, like we should?
It's not as easy as it seems.
Fairytales tend to pale when there are no more left to read.

We learn to fall
To let the love wash over it all.
Break our fall.
I don't want the story
I don't need the story anymore.

Oh the day slips away,
and we've broken everything.
We were wrong, but we'd known that our feet walk not in dreams.

Oh I hope you understand It's not that I don't believe.
Cuz I'd look for all of my years, and never find the things you are for me.
Yeah, and all of those years couldn't build me like you do.
And you do.
Learn to fall.
Break my fall.

Let Go

Body looking for soul
hungry for home.
You gotta lay your weapons down,
I'm sure that you know.

Could you have turned into the man who
used to chase you in your dreams?
Could it be as hard as it seems?
Or is it just that simple? Soon you'll have to

Let go
and watch it through the world that you know.
Let it go
and wash away the world that you know.
Any way it goes.

Reborn to follow their way,
you've got a hand in the game.
You know how cheap their attention can be
when they just want to continue their name.

Could you have turned into a man who
would have laughed had you been braver?
And why not now, to dream again, become the
man who saved you, soon you'll have to.

Take a look through the stills you took.
It wasn't all that long ago.
Empty cupboards, just a beer in your hand.
It was easy then.

Like A Fool

You felt something alone.
You keep to your own.
We'll never know, will we dear?
Steps you took from the start,
To be where you are,
but I don't know where you go.

And like a fool
I'm looking 'round for an answer
with my head in my hands.
So I have to

Close my eyes
to all but my own world
because the more I find,
the more I realize I am
just a rebel and a fool.

You had fallen down,
Your face in the ground.
And you were all alone
On top of a hill,
but we love you still.
Oh you're so far from where you've come.

just a rebel and a fool.
looking for something good yeah.

Yeeeeeaaaah...

And like a fool
I'm looking 'round for an answer
with my head in my hands.
And so I have to calm my soul, I

Close my eyes
to all but my own world
because the more I find,

I close my eyes...
To realize...

do do do...

I am just a rebel and a fool.

While We're Young

So here's the story in the paper.
We would rather sleep instead.
This is what they want.
I close my eyes as they turn my head away.

The dirt is piling up around us slowly.
We don't even care.
They drown us with their drug,
And the sad thing is, that we like it here.

Still we cannot see. We'd rather just be numb,
and it's only just begun.
A lock without a key, a mouth without a tongue.
They get us while we're young.

Complaining in the darks, we cry for someone
stronger than ourselves
to pick our bodies up.
Our legs collapse. We've too long been held.

Oh and when we step into the room
where our baby sleeps,
will we think to let her walk or be
afraid to let her use her own two feet?

Stuck Around

Would it be ok to ask you how it's been?
I saw your picure. You look as good as you did then.
Always had to tell you, but didn't know how.
I wish that I had stuck around

Do you remember that one day in the rain?
You held my hand, I thought I'd never be the same.
So much time between us and you're married now.
I wish that I had stuck around.

It's not that I still love you.
I fought that battle long time ago.
It's just that I still remember how I felt
when I knew you had closed the door.

Now I got through this, but sometimes I still look back.
You're the girl that got away, and I've never been proud of that.
Too much time between us and we're all grown up now.
I wish that I had stuck around.

Guitar Solo

Now I got through this, but sometimes I still look back.
You're the girl that got away, and I've never been proud of that.
I always had to tell you, but didn't know how.
I wish that I had stuck around.
Too much time between us and we're all grown up now.
I wish that I had stuck around.

from Paper Sun

Left To Dry

she was left alone to dry
to contemplate the things that her other half denied
a wave of grief in sight
was cresting and the crash had drowned all her thoughts inside
she was left alone today
to think about the things she had only yesterday
she don't know how he got away
all's fair in love and war but it's an ugly price to pay

she felt like she was left
like she was

left to dry
she was left alone to heal the wounds that hurt from deep inside
she was left to dry
she had something great
she would have changed if she could make it right

she will sleep alone tonight
and the torment of her mind will keep her up to analyze
all the bait and all the brine
and bitter is the taste there is no sweet to this goodbye

and like the splinters from a ship drying on the shoreline
part of something great but nothing by itself
this love was broken taking part of her away with him
pieces lying in the sand and broken shells

Slow Down

yeah i'm writing this song for you
for the ones i knew
oh forgive me it's been so long
i hope to see you soon
how are things for you today
you live a thousand miles away
and does it really seem so long
since we've been eager to be where we are now?

and now we're here and now we want to

slow down
want to slow down
we've been running right through the afternoon
till the evening comes around
slow down
share what we've found
we've been flying for such a long long time
it'd be nice to touch the ground

do you ever wish you could rewind
just to be there one more time
this time around you'd be sure
with all the shit you know, you know you'd be alright
and where we are today
will seem a thousand miles away
and you know it won't take too long
to bring us right on back to where we are now

All Of This

hey girl, whatcha doin?
there's something in the kitchen that shouldn't be brewin
oh, hey, step away
we should save our love for another day
but hey girl you got me goin
the kitchen's on fire and we're stuck in the oven
hey, oh, you should know
all of this makes me love you more

hey and everything seems alright
i know that you will have me tonight
take me where my heart says yes but my mind will say no

hey babe, you got me lover
the house burned down and we're running for cover
hey, oh, you should know
all of this makes me love you more

Run My Spirit Down

the earth went spinning round the sun today
a little faster than it did yesterday
still i insist to ignore
the steady pace of the passing days
and i run my spirit down

got no money in my bank account
rent is due and i just ran out
still i insist to ignore
how checks and change seem to dissipate
and i run my spirit down

but when the worst bursts on us like a cloud of rain
and when it hurts and there's no one there to take the blame
and debts are due and we've no idea how we're gonna pay
the clouds will part and we'll see the sky again

the home team's losing and i don't know why
they never win, no, but they always try
still i insist to ignore
it's only time before the loss is mine
and i run my spirit down

Put It Off

these days i seem to be
at a loss of reality
surrounded by, shrouded by the walls
glass eyes don't try to see the sun anymore

surrounded by my fear, don't know
how to live round here, too many
choices to be made

i'll put it off for another day
i'll wait till the sun is shining again
i'll wait until i can start hoping again
i'll wait until the sky isn't cloudy
till then i'll wait

these days i'm losing sleep
wretched dreams, they get the best of me
running through the halls, running out of time
breathing deep, desperately
just try to clear my mind

Old Fashioned Love

old fashioned love, you stole my heart again
old fashioned love, i miss the way it's been

do you feel alone
or is it just me
who's on my own

old fashioned love, you led me on back then
why not again

old fashioned love, you broke my heart back then
please not again

Red White and Blue

come live in our free democracy
where well to do live in harmony
with a patriotic view
sing our creed, we only act through piety
through righteousness we will truly see
all the evil in this world

have a look around, the proud outweigh the practical
these guns are not retractable
no room for another view
come see our super-loaded magazine
spraying lead across the sea
at those god-forsaken fools

we'll have them bleeding for you
for the red white and blue
for the pride of these wounds
that we self-inflict for the red white and blue

come breathe the cloying air of equality
it stretches back through a history
of a 'seperate but equal' youth
come believe in the countrymen in factories
they work so hard so their kids can eat
so good of them to do

When I Dream

it's past 8, the sun has set
hadn't really noticed, never really noticed before
the air is clear
different type of feeling, i'm getting from this evening breeze

and i will remember you
when i dream
the most perfect, most beautiful summer sky
ever seen

the sky is blue
time is going backwards and you are walking forward to me
our tears have dried
the train that you had been on had backed into the station again

we're in my room
you are not awake yet, no, we're both still laying here in my bed
my eyes are closed
backwards kind of feeling, i think you will be leaving me soon

The Book (Again and Again)

tonight i'll open up my book
daylight, the story opens up
first page, description of my fears
slow flames evaporate my tears

my mood swings as do my words

again and again
there is no end
again and again
inside my head

pack up, we're going ocean-bound
cause it's a good day to go where the undertow
will lift you off the ground
freeze frame, i breath the desert air
oh look at me, my stories changing again

i will write all my stories
in this book of a thousand chapters
words will change, but the story stays true
it's no race, but my heart won't slow down

Stay

grass up to my knees
feels good beneath my feet
in the shade under the trees is where you'll find me
for the moment i am done
the world outside the wall is gone
and we only need enough to keep on breathing
i remember as i see
the day's a constant memory
it recurs as if a dream feels it should be

and i say
stay, stay
let me stay
my heart says what i can't obey
i'm obligated to another day
but please let this one stay

our lives are hard to see
through the instant poetry
but in a thin space in between, our thoughts form clearly
and with the warmth from a paper sun
the world outside the wall burns on
never stop, must always run to make them happy
but the wind that turns the leaves
has been my healing remedy
it feels right as if a dream feels it should be
